Comparing Orthodontics and General Dentistry

children's dentist in bethel parkPatients are often referred to the orthodontist by their general dentist, but Cartwright Orthodontics is happy to see you without a referral. We may, however, recommend you schedule an appointment with a general dentist for a checkup first to ensure your teeth and gums are healthy before beginning with braces. Most children initially visit our office after receiving a referral from the children’s dentist in Bethel Park.

Referrals to the Orthodontist

During your or your child’s regular visits to the general dentist, the team may tell you that you could benefit from orthodontic treatment. Orthodontics are beneficial for more than cosmetic reasons. Properly-aligned teeth facilitate proper eating and speaking and promote good jaw health. Bite misalignments in children can also lead to far more serious problems later on.

If, however, you don’t receive a referral from your dentist before visiting the orthodontist, we will advise you schedule a checkup and cleaning before beginning your treatment. Teeth and gums should be decay- and infection-free from the start, and removing plaque and tartar buildup will help you or your child maintain better dental health throughout your time wearing braces.

If you don’t have a regular general or children’s dentist in Murray or Bethel Park, we can provide excellent recommendations.

First Visit

When you schedule an appointment with Cartwright Orthodontics, we’ll perform a thorough orthodontic examination. This first visit includes:

  • Panoramic x-rays
  • Photographs
  • A discussion of the patient’s smile needs
  • Detailing the basics of orthodontic treatment

If braces are needed for improving your bite, we’ll discuss the next steps for beginning your treatment as soon as possible.

During Your Orthodontic Treatment

Once you or your child are undergoing your treatment with braces, periodic appointments with the orthodontist will be necessary to ensure your treatment is progressing as it should be. Visit Cartwright Orthodontics every four to six weeks for progress checks and necessary adjustments and you’ll be marching your way onto straighter teeth and better bite alignment.

In addition to staying on top of your regular visits, make sure you maintain a diet free from hard or sticky foods and candy, and protect your braces with a mouthguard during sports or at night, if you suffer from the teeth grinding condition known as bruxism.
